More colors and patterns unlock as you and your fishy friends push through leagues and unlock better rods. For example, you may want one of those snazzy Apricot Stripes (number 21) but will have to wait until you’ve cleared the Heal League before you even have a chance of catching one.
There are a few rules to the rates of catching certain Magikarp with particular rods, as well as some rules when it comes to stats. Yeah, rules aren’t fun – but dem’s da breaks, and you’ll do best to remember these rules of thumb:
The earliest rod you can catch a certain pattern with is the one with that gives the highest chance of catching. (But I note it with each pattern in this guide just in case. )
The Standard pattern (number 1) has the highest catch chance on all rods.
Rare Magikarp have guaranteed good bonuses, but only common Magikarp can have super high bonuses at “stunning individual”.
When a pattern is mentioned as “Very rare” below, that means there is less than a 3% chance to catch that pattern with the listed rod.
All patterns (aside from Gold) can give bonuses to JP from training, food, events, or even coins. The Gold pattern only grants coin bonuses.
With that, let’s get to the patterns!
